Inside the Earthwatch
The Earthwatch is named after the Earthwatch Foundation who helped to build it in 1989.

T The Earthwatch roundhouse has a raised central hearth with a large wattle-framed clay oven where we sometimes bake bread.

There is a lot of space in the Earthwatch and, because of the low door which faces north, the interior is quite dark until your eyes adjust.

We can light log fires in here because the reed thatch is not too thick and the smoke can filter through it. There is no need for a chimney in this house and the soot from the smoke actually helps to lessen the risk of sparks causing a fire and also keeps insects away.

The Earthwatch is very atmospheric and visiting storytellers often regale us with ancient tales just as they would have in the Iron Age

Exit the Earthwatch via the low doorway
